San Diego Classic Speech & Debate Tournament
San Diego, CA
March 12th – 14th, 2009
Part One: Tournament Entries
Welcome!
The speech and debate clubs of CONTROL and Paradigm look forward to meeting each and every one of you in vibrant San Diego. This year we offer a new, larger venue at the beautiful University of San Diego. We hope that you will all have an exciting and rewarding competition.
General Guidelines
The registration information at http://sandiego.homeschooldebate.org needs to filled out and transmitted to reserve a place at the tournament. If host housing is desired, the Host Housing Form should be sent to the e-mail address listed.
Dress Code: The Tournament Director will adjudicate disputes regarding dress using Section III of the NCFCA Qualifying Tournament Participation General Rules. Participants should view this document prior to attending the tournament. It can be found at http://www.ncfca.org.
Competitor Eligibility: Any student who meets the requirements set forth by the NCFCA Qualifying Tournament Participation General Rules, and who is a Region 2 competitor, may participate.
Entry Procedure: Please go to http://sandiego.homeschooldebate.org, click on “Student Registration” and go through the steps.
Payment: Registration is not complete until your fees have been paid. This can be done automatically at the end of the registration process - just click the “Pay” button and follow the prompts.
If you prefer not to pay electronically, you may send a check payable to HCS to the following address:
HCS
5725 Kearny Villa Road, Suite G
San Diego, CA 92123
ATTN: San Diego Classic
Important! Please carefully write the specific name or names used for your registration and the words "SD Classic" on the lower left corner of the check so that we can match your payment with your registration.
Questions can be directed to: SDClassic@cox.net.
Entry Deadline: Entries received after February 28, 2009 will not be accepted. After your entry is completed, you will be able to print a confirmation from the registration site. This tournament may fill very quickly, so early registration is encouraged to guarantee a spot. Team policy and duo competitors should check with their partners to ensure that they are also registered. A team is not registered, and individuals on that team are not registered, until both partners are registered. Send an e-mail to SDClassic@cox.net if there are any corrections; events added, or dropped; or if there are any questions.
Part Two: Tournament Structure
Early Check-In: Tournament check-in for competitors will commence Wednesday evening from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the foyer of Maher Hall at the University of San Diego. Check-in will continue on Thursday morning from 7:30 until 10:00. We encourage competitors and parents to avail themselves of early check-in. This will make them less rushed on the first morning of the tournament. It will allow them a chance to scan the layout of the campus to figure out parking, the arrangement of buildings, and other issues pertinent to becoming oriented and ready for competition the next day. It will also greatly benefit the conduct of the tournament by minimizing logistical issues on the opening morning. We hit the ground running early on Thursday, and have no time to allow for getting misoriented. University of San Diego is a long campus, and getting from one end to the other between events in a timely fashion will require familiarity with the buildings. Thank you for your consideration on this point.
Debate: We have enough rooms to run Lincoln-Douglas debate at the same time as team policy debate. It will be double flighted.
Individual Events: Because of the room situation, we will not be running Extemp on Wednesday night as has been the recent custom. Extemp will begin 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the IE rounds on Thursday and Friday.
IE events and Lincoln-Douglas debate will run to finals. Team policy debate will only proceed to semifinals.
Part Three: Debate
This tournament will host both LD and team policy debate. It is our desire to accommodate all debate applicants, but due to room restrictions, we may have to cap registration at 122 policy teams and 64 LD teams. If these slots fill, any additional entries will be placed on a waiting list. If this should happen, we will notify you, simultaneously making every effort to find enough additional space to accommodate our needs. Waiting list teams will be notified immediately if a slot becomes available.
Laptops: The use of laptops by debaters during the their rounds will not be permitted at this tournament.
Part Four: Individual Events Offered
All ten NCFCA sanctioned events will be offered. Additionally, Novice Impromptu will be offered as an option for junior high school students and students in their first year of NCFCA competition. Students may enter up to three individual events per pattern for a total of up to six IE events for the tournament. In an effort to help competitors plan which events to enter, the events for each pattern have been set in advance, and will be as follows:
Pattern A
Dramatic Interpretation
Expository Speaking
Impromptu
Novice Impromptu
Open Interpretation
Extemporaneous Speaking
Pattern B
Apologetics
Duo Interpretation
Humorous Interpretation
Original Oratory
Persuasive Speaking
Novice Impromptu:
Novice impromptu will conduct three rounds of preliminary competition, two during normal IE prelims, one during semifinals. Contestants in this event will break directly from these three preliminary rounds to finals, which will be conducted at the same time as normal IE finals.
Part Five: Financial Responsibility
Entry Fees
Team Debate: $40 per team policy debater ($80 per team). Policy debaters must fill in their partner's full name.
LD Debate: $50 per debater.
IE Events: A total of $25 for the first IE event, $20 for the second, third, and fourth events, and $10 per event for any entry thereafter. Duo Interpretations must fill in the partner's full name.
NCFCA Affiliate Fees
Participants need to be NCFCA Affiliates in order to participate in National Qualifying Tournaments. Please ensure that your family affiliation is renewed and that the student information is correct before attempting to register for this tournament. Affiliate registration will not be offered onsite. Please go to http://www.ncfca.org for more details on becoming an affiliate.
Part Six: Judging and Timing Responsibility
Judging
There will be a judge orientation prior to each round.
Judges accompanying participants need to check in at the Judges’ Table each morning.
Commitment: We are attempting to find as many judges as we can from within San Diego and surrounding communities to be critics for the tournament. However, in order to allow the maximum number of entrants to participate we are asking entrants to help provide judges for a minimal amount of rounds. Judges are considered non-participants over 18 years old who are eligible based upon the NCFCA criteria. This usually means parents, parents of other club members, former debaters who have moved on to college, or friends in the area.
The following commitment for preliminary rounds is recommended:
Each debate team (an LD participant is considered a team) is asked to provide a judge for a minimum of two (2) rounds of any event, debate or IE. These judges should be available for any and every round, until the judging commitment is fulfilled. An individual may judge multiple rounds in order to fill the judging commitment for multiple teams.
IE participants should provide one judge for each event they enter, each such judge serving for one round in any IE event.
Time Keepers Volunteers
Commitment - Entrants are asked to provide a volunteer to act as a timer. Family members and friends who are attending the tournament can be used as timers. Timepieces will be provided by the tournament, but participants are requested to bring their own timepiece as a backup.
Part Seven: Tournament Location
The University of San Diego is located at:
5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA 92110-2492
This is on a high bluff overlooking the intersection of I-5 and I-8 at the mouth of Mission Valley, just a few miles north of downtown San Diego.
For explicit directions to the campus, select the tab to the left - "Directions to the University of San Diego".
The Awards Ceremony will be held at the College Avenue Baptist Church at (you guessed it) 4747 College Avenue, San Diego, CA 92115. See the Awards Ceremony Tab for more information.
Part Eight: Hotel Accommodations
There is an overabundance of hotels and motels in the area. The tournament will not be securing a preferential rate at a local area hotel. Experience has shown that by scanning any of the several travel websites available on-line, rates more favorable than those secured by the tournament are readily available. We encourage you to follow this practice.
Part Nine: Lunch Options (See also tab on meals)
Meals will require careful planning on the part of everyone. The University of San Diego is close to many restaurants from fast food to fine dining (We will have a map available at student check-in of restaurants in the USD area). However, the time allotted for lunch meals, and for some dinner meals will not allow for someone to eat a meal off campus if they are actively participating in the tournament. Family members can easily make food runs to local fast food eateries or convenience stores and be back in reasonable amounts of time with provisions sufficient to ensure their family members are fed. The campus cafeteria will not be open. To ensure a workable tournament schedule, breaks for lunch or dinner are often no more than half an hour.
The campus mandates that meals on campus are provided by on-campus catering. The tournament has no control over the pricing of these meals. Box lunches are available for pre-purchase for lunch and dinner on Thursday and Friday, and for lunch on Saturday. The pick-up room will be open one hour before the designated meal time until one hour after. Watch the schedule carefully and plan when you or a designated individual will pick up your lunches each day. Regrettably there can be no refunds for missing these meals.
Order your lunches when you register. Make your decisions thoughtfully - the same deadline applies to your lunch selection as to your general registration. There will be no changes afterward.
