ATTN: San Diego Classic

Important! Please carefully write the specific name or names used for your registration and the words "SD Classic" on the lower left corner of the check so that we can match your payment with your registration.

Questions can be directed to registrar.sd.homeschooldebate@cox.net.

Entry Deadline: Entries received after December 7, 2007 may not be accepted. After your entry is completed, you will be able to print a confirmation from the registration site. This tournament may fill very quickly, so early registration is encouraged to guarantee a spot. Team policy and duo competitors should check with their partners to ensure that they are also registered. A team is not registered, and individuals on that team are not registered, until both partners are registered. Send an e-mail to registrar.sd.homeschooldebate@cox.net if there are any corrections; events added, or dropped; or if there are any questions.

Part Two: Tournament Structure

In order to accommodate ever-increasing registration with shrinking facilities, significant changes have been made in the tournament structure. These are:

Early Check-In: Extemporaneous Speaking participants will check-in on Wednesday afternoon, January 2nd, at the Clairemont Church of God, 4955 Conrad Street, San Diego, 92117, from 5 PM to 6 PM. Other competitors traveling with extemporaneous speakers may also check in at this time.

Extemporaneous Speaking: Extemporaneous Speaking competition will run on Wednesday, January 2nd, from 6 PM to 9 PM at the Clairemont Church of God. There will be NO extemporaneous competition during the IE patterns on Thursday and Friday.

Student Check-In: Student check-in (except for those with the extemporaneous speakers) will run from 7 PM to 9 PM on Wednesday, January 2nd, at the Holiday Inn Sea World, 3737 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, 92110. We encourage every competitor to check in at this time to receive your materials and to verify the details of your registration for the tournament, which begins the next day. For those absolutely unable to do so, we will have additional student check-in available on both Thursday and Friday mornings at Pt. Loma Nazarene University at the beginning of each day.

Part Three: Debate

This tournament will host both LD and team policy debate. It is our desire to accommodate all debate applicants, but due to room restrictions, we may have to cap registration at 110 policy teams. If these slots fill, any additional entries will be placed on a waiting list. If this should happen, we will notify you, simultaneously making every effort to find enough additional space to accommodate our needs. Waiting list teams will be notified immediately if a slot becomes available.

Part Four: Individual Events Offered

Students may not enter more than three individual events per pattern. All ten NCFCA sanctioned events will be offered. No minimum is required. In an effort to help competitors plan which events to enter in advance, the events for each pattern have been set in advance, and will be as follows:

Pattern X

Extemporaneous Speaking (on Wednesday, Jan 2nd, at the Clairemont Church of God)

Pattern A

Dramatic Interpretation
Expository Speaking
Impromptu
Open Interpretation

Pattern B

Apologetics
Duo Interpretation
Humorous Interpretation
Original Oratory
Persuasive Speaking

Part Five: Financial Responsibility

Entry Fees

Team Debate: $50 per team.

LD Debate: $35 per debater.

IE Events: A total of $25 for the first two events (whether you register for one event or two), $10 per event thereafter. Duo Interpretations must fill in the partner's full name.

NCFCA Affiliate Fees

Participants need to be NCFCA Affiliates in order to participate in National Qualifying
Tournaments. Please ensure that your family affiliation is renewed and that the student information is correct before attempting to register for this tournament. Affiliate registration will not be offered onsite.
Please go to http://www.ncfca.org for more details on becoming an affiliate.

Part Six: Judging and Timing Responsibility

Judging

There will be a judge orientation prior to each round.

Judges accompanying participants need to check in at the Judges’ Table each morning.

Commitment: We are attempting to find as many judges as we can from within San Diego and surrounding communities to be critics for the tournament. However, in order to allow the maximum number of entrants to participate we are asking entrants to help provide judges for a minimal amount of rounds. Judges are considered non-participants over 18 years old who are eligible based upon the NCFCA criteria. This usually means parents, parents of other club members, former debaters who have moved on to college, or friends in the area.

The following commitment for preliminary rounds is recommended:

Each debate team (an LD participant is considered a team) is asked to provide a judge for a minimum of two (2) rounds of any event, debate or IE. These judges should be available for any and every round, until the judging commitment is fulfilled. An individual may judge multiple rounds in order to fill the judging commitment for multiple teams.

IE participants should provide one judge for each event they enter, each such judge serving for one round in any IE event.

Time Keepers Volunteers

Commitment - Entrants are asked to provide a volunteer to act as a timer and provide their own timepiece. Family members and friends who are attending the tournament can be used as timers.

Part Seven: Tab-Room Operations Class

For people interested in learning how to operate a tab-room (learning to tabulate the results of speech and debate events), we would like to invite you to a special class being offered by Konrad Hack, the tab director of this tournament. Konrad Hack is the tab room czar of the NCFCA. He has been the tab room director for most NCFCA nationals, and trained directly or indirectly most of the tab staff in California. He is also frequently the tab room director for college-level national tournaments. Do not miss this opportunity to benefit from his comprehensive knowledge of the subject and his unique resume of experience.

The class will run the entire day, Wednesday, January 2nd, from 9 AM to 5 PM, at Point Loma Nazarene University in Cabrillo Hall. There is an additional fee of $20 per person to join the class, and you will be required to provide your own laptop computer.

When registering, you will be asked whether you want to participate in this class. Follow the prompts to enroll and pay electronically.

If you desire to pay by check, mail in your check made payable to "HCS". Please mail it to:

Part Ten: Pt Loma Nazarene University Orientation

Pt. Loma Nazarene University, our host, is making available to participants any and all information possible to help students and their parents evaluate the institution as a possible option for the higher education. PLNU admissions will be addressing the entire assembly during orientation on Thursday morning. Additionally, campus tours are routinely offered on Thursdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM, conducted by a PLNU student. Finally, there will be question and answer seminars conducted by an admissions director on Friday at 11:15 AM and 1:15 PM.

Parents exploring opportunities for higher education for their children, especially those graduating in the next two years, are encouraged to attend these seminars. Come armed with any questions, documents, or other items you may feel you need to discuss your child’s situation.

If you need to make arrangements for separate appointments, or if you have questions that need addressing prior to the tournament, you should contact Shannon Hutchison at shannonhutchison@ptloma.edu with your questions.

Part Eleven: Lunch Options

Meals will require careful planning on the part of everyone. Point Loma is distant from local fast food restaurants. The campus cafeteria will not be open except briefly on Saturday. To ensure a workable tournament schedule, there will be no scheduled breaks for lunch or dinner. Box lunches are available for pre-purchase, and can be picked up from 11:30 AM to 2.00 PM on Thursday and Friday. Watch the schedule carefully and plan when you or a designated individual will pick up your lunches each day. Regrettably there can be no refunds for missing these meals.

The Cafeteria will be open for brunch from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday. The staff at Pt Loma Nazarene University has asked us to please pre-register if we plan to use this service. However, payment for Saturday brunch will be at the door, not with registration.

Additionally, the Point Break Café, which serves drinks, snacks, and light fare on a limited basis, will be open Thursday and Friday from 7 AM to 2 PM. Finally, the bookstore next to Nicholson Commons will also be open for a few hours on Saturday making available additional light snacks.

Order your lunches when you register. Make your decisions thoughtfully - the same deadline applies to your lunch selection as to your general registration. There will be no changes afterward.
